The Jane Austen society : a novel / Natalie Jenner.
"Just after the Second World War, in the small English village of Chawton, an unusual but like-minded group of people band together to attempt something remarkable. One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England's finest novelists. Now it's home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen's legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen's home and her legacy. These people, a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others, could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen. As each of them endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma, some from the recent war, others from more distant tragedies, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society."-- Provided by publisher.

Richard Armitage is an excellent choice of narrator for this celebration of the famed British author's work. His deep, resonant voice meanders through the stories of seven different people in the small English town of Chawton. These characters share various individual struggles in their own lives, along with a love of the work of Jane Austen. With his crisp delivery and agile pacing, Armitage makes this easy to listen to, but the number of characters can make following their stories confusing at times. There are moments, too, when his portrayals of female characters' voices sound awkward and forced. All in all, though, this appealing audiobook makes for a great casual listen, especially for those familiar with Austen's work. In the English village of Chawton just after the end of World War Two, a disparate group of Jane Austen lovers come together to preserve the local cottage where the author resided. Included in the group are a local doctor, a former schoolteacher, an American actress, a local farmer, and a housemaid in the manor house connected to Austen. Armitage's warmth and sincerity underscore the authenticity of these characters, all struggling through past loss, who find new purpose through a shared love of Austen's works. His narration is unhurried, allowing the distinctly voiced and fully developed inhabitants of this little English village to draw listeners into their own stories. In a novel that is peppered with lively discussions of Austen's novels, the author and narrator give add a light touch so that the conversations do not turn into literary lectures. This debut will charm even those unfamiliar with Austen. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
